67th Grammy Awards: Tems Becomes Winner For Best African Music Performance

History is made again, as Nigerian superstar Tems becomes an x2 Grammy winner.

The most anticipated and biggest music ceremony—The 67th Grammy Awards- happened last night in LA, and there was a burst of excitement and frenzy all over social media.

The event, which is widely acclaimed as the peak for musical awards globally, saw superstar artiste Tems make a stunning win for Best African Music Performance for the hit song “Love Me, Jeje.” This marks Tems’ second Grammy Award win in the recently added category, displacing Afrobeats stars Asake, Rema, Tyla, Burna Boy, and Wizkid. The awarded song sampled from Seyi Sodimu’s classic Love Me Jeje mounts Tems as the second person and woman to be awarded for the category, tailing Tyla’s win in 2023.

Dressed in golden attire, The ‘Love Me Jeje’ crooner made a way to the stage alongside her mum, managers Muyiwa Awoniyi and Wale Davies, and producer Guiltybeatz to deliver a heartwarming acceptance speech

“Dear God, thank you so much for putting me on this stage and bringing me this team. Tomorrow is my mum’s birthday, and this is her first Grammy. I just want to thank you, mum, because she’s really done a lot for me and my brother. I want to thank my team, Muyiwa, Wale, my beautiful stylist Dunsin Wright—thank you so much. To God be the glory because, honestly, He’s changed my life so much. Thank you so much, thank you, God.”

Despite the record-setting win at the 2025 Grammy Awards Ceremony, Tems lost two of her nominations for Best R&B Performance, “Burning,” and Best Global Music Album, “Born In The Wild,” to Sza’s “Saturn,” and Chris Brown’s 11:11(Deluxe) album. Other artists with noteworthy wins at the Grammys include Wizkid and Bloody Civilian for their contributions as featured artists to Bob Marley: One Love – Music Inspired by the Film (Deluxe) by Various Artists, which won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. Also, Davido, Lojay and producers Yung Alpha and Chopstixx for their contributions on Chris Brown’s Grammy awarded “11:11 Deluxe” for Best R&B album. This earns the all acts Grammy certificates.

While Tems bagged only one of her three nominations, other Nigerian artists didn’t win in their categories, including Rema (for HEIS), Burna Boy (for Higher), Chris Brown, Davido & Lojay (for Sensational), and Asake & Wizkid (for MMS). Yemi Alade’s Tomorrow was also nominated in various categories but did not win.

However, Nigerian artistes made bold fashion statements at the global award ceremony. Yemi Alade stunned in a traditional attire, while Asake embodied a military-inspired look as he claimed to be in his military time. Lojay dazzled in a blazing outfit, and Rema embraced a stylish streetwear look.

The 67th Grammy Awards left many Nigerians with a downpour of emotions as mixed reactions from fan bases surfaced across social media.

But this one isn’t just a win for Tems’ Rebel Gang but a win for the country as a whole, with Tems becoming the most awarded Nigerian at the Grammys.
