In 2021, podcasts became a pandemic of some sort, and everyone with an opinion was ready to purchase a mic, create a YouTube channel or a podcast page, invite a few friends over for an episode, and air whatever opinion they had. I’m sure some vendors that sold mics and sound cards at the time are currently sitting on a crazy amount of money. A few times on X, most people begged to ban new podcasts or stop selling podcast equipment.
Don’t get me wrong; there are a couple of podcasts with great content. For me, podcasts are another medium for learning and sometimes unwinding. Most times, while working, just to ease tension and take the pressure off, I find an episode from a podcast to listen to. When I want to consume content or information but don’t feel like watching something or reading a book, podcasts are my go-to alternative.
Since the 30th of September was International Podcasts Day, here are a few Nigerian podcasts I would like to recommend;
Also known as the bounce or “Gbeborun Central” hosted by FK and Jola. This podcast blends humor, personal stories, and unfiltered opinions on life, relationships, and pop culture. Your type of platform that allows the hosts or guests to talk about anything freely.
Aside from the dynamic between the hosts, this podcast is known for its relatable content, vibrant conversations, and authenticity. If you need a good laugh and want to learn a thing or two while at it, this is the podcast for you.
The Zero Conditions podcast, hosted by Motolani Alake and Melody Hassan, is home to unfiltered conversations about music, pop culture, and societal issues, particularly within the African landscape. This show is a mix of banter, in-depth analysis, and insider knowledge. Zero Conditions offers listeners a fresh take on the Nigerian music scene.
This podcast also features conversations with music artists, executives and more who are rarely seen on podcasts or traditional interviews. This makes this podcast a unique platform for them to share untold stories, personal insights, and perspectives beyond the surface level. These candid discussions provide a deeper look into artists’ lives and creative processes, giving listeners a rare glimpse into their journeys, challenges, and artistic vision.
Hosted by Wonu Osikoya, this podcast focuses on conversations within the creative and entertainment industry. This podcast creates an insightful discussion and a look at the career trajectory and experiences of creatives, artists, executives, and even lawyers across the entertainment and creative industry.
Also, while many podcasts focus on the most prominent artists in the Afrobeats industry, Osikoya Speaks spotlights emerging acts, helping to passionately shape narratives and relentlessly redefine conversations about the Nigerian music scene.
Here’s another podcast that delves into societal issues and pop culture on the side in fun and light-hearted conversations. In the words of the host, Taymesan, the podcast is a sweet type of gist type of show” for sweet and entertaining but serious conversation, where some of your favorite celebrities and also individuals with intriguing stories come to spill the tea on the journey of their lives; some come with sad experiences and some glorious.
But in all, Tea With Tay never misses to make the show worthwhile.
For Christians who long for podcasts related to personal struggles, healing, belief, and faith, The Shining Light podcast is for you. Focusing on African Gen Z and Millennial Christians, the host, Flourish Ubanyi, opens up godly and informative conversations with testimonies and stories of thriving young Christians as they walk their Christian journey.
If you’re looking for a podcast that shares vulnerable and honest conversations about young African men, Menisms is your go-to podcast for all things men. The urban pop culture podcast helps in recognizing the masculinity of men while touching on issues relating to them including dealing with women, emotions, and sex amongst other topics.
With the hosts, Michael Sonariwo and Olu Murewa sharing everything about men, Menisms is by men but for everyone.
